Frame it for your camera.
Meter it for your intention.
Choose your camera and focal length, then decide which part of the scene matters to your exposure.
Your first reading
- Match your equipment.
Select your camera format, such as 35mm, 645 or 6×6, and the focal length of the lens on that camera. Choose the orientation you intend to use. Check the preview before taking a reading; the available view is limited by your iPhone’s camera.
- Choose a meter mode.
Use Spot, Weighted or AVG, or switch to CUSTOM and highlight the important area with your finger. The yellow overlay shows your selection.
- Set your exposure controls.
Choose your ISO. In aperture priority, choose an aperture and Evlume recommends a shutter speed. In shutter priority, choose a shutter speed and Evlume recommends an aperture.
- Take a reading.
Keep the phone steady and tap the red reading button. Use the result on your camera. The reading remains available while the camera preview returns to live view; take another reading when the scene or lighting changes.
Four ways to meter
Spot
Meter a small area. Position the spot over the part of the scene you want to measure and choose its size.
Weighted
Give the central region more influence. Adjust the weighting controls to suit your composition.
AVG
Take an average reading across the selected camera frame.
Custom
Highlight one or more areas with your finger. Adjust the importance of the highlighted area and the surrounding frame.
Make Custom your own
Choose a fine or broad highlighter, then highlight the area you want to use. Tap the eraser or double-tap the preview to clear the highlighting and start again.
Custom starts with 100% influence inside the highlighted area and 0% outside it. The weighting control lets you change that balance. Overlay visibility and opacity change how the mask looks, not its metering influence.
The bookmark control saves up to five Custom masks for reuse. A saved mask is a shape, not subject tracking: make sure it lines up with your new scene before you take a reading. Use a compatible camera frame when loading it.
Common questions
Why does the scene look different from my camera’s view?
Check the camera format, focal length and orientation. Evlume uses those settings to frame the area being metered. The iPhone’s own lens and available field of view limit how closely it can match every camera and lens combination.
The camera preview is unavailable. What should I do?
In iPhone Settings, open Privacy & Security → Camera and allow Evlume to use the camera. Return to Evlume. If permission is already enabled, close and reopen the app. Contact us if the preview still does not appear.
What if Evlume asks me to hold steady?
Keep the phone steady, allow the camera a moment to adjust after a large lighting change, and take another reading. Keep your highlighted area aligned with your subject. If ordinary use repeatedly fails, tell us your iPhone model, iOS version and what you were metering.
Why can different modes give different readings?
They give different areas of the scene different influence. A bright sky, a shaded face and a dark foreground can call for different exposure choices. Compare the areas being sampled and check any exposure compensation you have set for that mode.
Does a reading guarantee the final photograph?
Evlume recommends an exposure from reflected light. The scene, your creative intent, camera, lens, film or sensor can affect the result. Meter calibration and exposure compensation are available in the app. For film exposures long enough to need reciprocity correction, follow the film manufacturer’s guidance.
Where can I find the full manual or reset settings?
Open Settings → Help & Information → Manual. Reset All Settings restores app preferences but keeps saved Custom masks and calibration records. Delete individual masks through the preset controls.
